More Midterm Exam Information
Hello all! I've been asked a lot about what is going to be on the Midterm Exam, specifically how the test will look. I'll tell you this much: it will have, among other things, a matching section for the definitions, a short answer section, and an essay. I won't tell you any more than that. Happy studying! :)

Hi everyone! Njomza suggested that we have a discussion about the vocabulary lessons each group presented during our last class. I think that's a great idea! 10 = Answer was complete, written in your own words, and at an excellent academic standard. Answer shows understanding of the reading, as well as careful and thoughtful interaction with the reading. Answer was free from major grammatical errors.
9 = Answer was complete, written in your own words, and at a very good academic standard. Answer shows understanding of the reading, as well as an ability to interact with the reading. Answer contained only 1-2 major grammatical errors.
8 = Answer was complete, written in your own words, and at an acceptable academic standard. Answer shows understanding of the reading, and an attempt at interacting with the reading. Answer contained only 3-4 major grammatical errors.
7 = Answer was complete, written in your own words, but it was not at an acceptable academic standard. Answer shows understanding of the reading, but not the ability to interact with the reading. Answer contained 5-6 major grammatical errors.
6 = Answer was incomplete, written in your own words, but was at a poor academic standard. It is unclear whether or not you understood the reading. Answer contained many grammatical errors.

The author states, "For students, this is the first impression of a new word. The deeper the first impression they get, the clearer and longer they will remember them. If there are too many words, students may become confused, discouraged, and frustrated" (pg. 40).
How in-depth should you go with a new word, and how can you avoid overloading students with too much information?

Part 1: Vocabulary Lesson
You must create a vocabulary lesson. The lesson can be created to fit any teaching context you choose. The lesson can be solely a vocabulary lesson, or it can be designed to fit vocabulary teaching into other classroom teaching. You may decide which approach to use.
You must write a complete lesson plan, which follows the following outline:
Opener/Introduction
Presentation of New Material
Review/Activities
Closer/Conclusion
Evaluation (this can be done during the lesson, or given as a homework assignment)
Materials Needed
You must include any materials you would use (such as: handouts, textbook pages, vocabulary lists, flashcards, etc.) in an appendix at the end of your lesson plan. Materials such as markers, tape, overhead projector, etc. do not need to be included, for obvious reasons.
Part 2: Philosophy of Teaching Vocabulary
The goal of this assignment is not only to show how you would teach vocabulary, but why you would take whatever approach you decide to take. Therefore, after each section of the lesson plan (except Materials Needed) you must include a summary of why you would use that particular strategy or approach to teaching vocabulary, as shown below. Your work must be much more detailed than the example below, but you can use the example to guide you:

Your paper will be a combination of lesson plan and vocabulary teaching philosophy. Any research you use, or ideas and strategies you use that are not your own, must be cited in your paper and in a bibliography at the end. 2) The Midterm Exam will cover the following topics and readings, so please study these things:

B) How words are learned from Chapter 2
C) Strategies for Teaching Vocabulary from Chapters 5, 6, & 7
D) I will not include material from the articles, as those are for online discussion. So, your study time should be focused on the textbook material.
E) Material from the textbooks, whether explicitly gone over in class or not, can be chosen for the exam, so study all the chapters we have covered: 1, 2, 5, 6, & 7.
